Marion was up before dawn on Saturday, driving to Indianapolis to sit on the WISH-TV Daybreak set and talk about a schoolhouse in LaGrange County.
The segment was part of Indiana Grown, which WISH-TV runs every Saturday to feature a company from somewhere in the state. This week it was us, and Marion got to represent LaGrange County on a statewide stage.
She opened with a line that made the anchors laugh. "I'm an accidental lavender farmer," she said, and then explained what she meant.
Six years ago we bought a schoolhouse. It needed work, and the work was going to take a while, so Marion planted lavender outside the building in the meantime. Not as a business plan. Just so anyone driving past would know something was coming.
That turned into a farmers market stand. The stand turned into a shop. Today there are 8,000 plants in the ground, fourteen varieties of lavender, and more than 95 products made from them.
None of that was the plan. It just kept going.
